Communication Access Coordinator
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a wide-ranging civil rights law that prohibits, under certain circumstances, discrimination based on disability. The ADA does not apply to the federal judiciary. However, the Judicial Conference of the United States has adopted a policy that all federal courts provide reasonable accommodations to participants with communication disabilities. Participants are defined as parties, attorneys, and witnesses of in-court or out-of-court judicial proceedings. Each federal court shall provide, at judiciary expense, sign language interpreters or other appropriate auxiliary aids and services to participants in federal court proceedings who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or have other communication disabilities.
The Communication Access Coordinator is responsible for coordinating these services upon request. Participants requesting communication services should contact the Communication Access Coordinator for the Western District of Tennessee at Communication_Access@tnwd.uscourts.gov. Requests need to be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to the scheduled judicial proceeding.
NOTE: Each courtroom is equipped with assistive listening devices which are readily available for use during court proceedings by participants, and spectators when deemed appropriate.
